Factors causing loss or decline of biodiversity in built-up areas

• Loss of large gardens and green spaces, and targeting of naturally-vegetated derelict sites, for development.
• Fragmentation of areas used by wildlife by development and transport infrastructure // Danger from new roads and traffic, especially where new roads cross traditional routes for Badger, Otter, Frogs and Toads.
• Loss of nesting and roosting sites for birds and bats due to demolition, repairs and conversions of buildings and built structures.
• Too intensive management and maintenance of gardens, grounds and green spaces, including excessive mowing and use of chemicals.
• Removal of ‘weed’ species which produce nectar and seeds for wildlife.
• Felling of trees for safety, removing nesting sites for birds, roosting sites for bats, and places for invertebrates.
• Poor aftercare and maintenance of landscaped sites for wildlife.

Legal Protection

Some species, such as Bats, Badgers and breeding birds are protected under the Wildlife & Countryside Act, 1981.

Some trees will be protected by Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) or policies relating to Conservation Areas.

The planning system contains other measures to support green infrastructure and the environment.
