What is being done

• Occasional inspection of other parts of TPT etc for additional glowworm sites.
• Habitat management to maintain and improve the Thurgoland site for the existing population by a management programme of cutting back trees and vegetation, and providing suitable ground conditions. DB, BMBC, Thurgoland parish council, BBT, Barnsley Nats
• Routine management of TPT between Thurgoland and Wortley sympathetic to Glowworm needs. BMBC

Glowworm

Key Objectives

• Raise awareness of the need to conserve populations of Glowworms and encourage participation in their conservation.
• Continue annual count of Glowworms on the known site supporting Glowworms and seek to identify any new locations in Barnsley.
• Undertake positive conservation management of site(s) that support Glowworms [see good conservation practice]
• Maintain the range and abundance of the existing Glowworm populations and if possible create areas for their potential expansion.

Roles:

Barnsley council and other land owners:

• follow best practice in managing site(s) to support and increase existing Glowworm populations

Barnsley Council as planning authority:

• takes into consideration records of Glowworm presence in the planning process
• sets conditions in relevant planning applications to ensure that relevant habitat features for Glowworm are maintained and enhanced

Voluntary groups and volunteers:

• provide records of sightings and signs of Glowworm
• help with information about the condition of sites that support Glowworm  
• help with measures to support Glowworm, eg: habitat management.
